Division 37 Coordinators
2009-2010
To provide a greater level of assistance to the members of Division 37, a group of Division Coordinators who focus on specific activities such as young children and seniors, membership, service leadership programs, club building, and other projects provide us with a solid foundation of knowledge, a professional attitude, and unparalleled enthusiasm that truly embodies the spirit of Kiwanis. Lieutenant Governor Donna Hill's team of dedicated coordinators are available to answer any of your questions. All coordinators are considered to be subject matter experts in their respective fields. Should you have any questions regarding their areas of expertise, you have but to ask. The coordinators can be contacted by e-mail; the contact information is listed below within each category:
The California-Nevada-Hawaii District Foundation (Cal-Nev-Ha District Foundation) is a 501(c) (3) Corporation under the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code and is governed by the provisions of the State of California. The Division 37 Coordinator acts as the direct representative of the Lieutenant Governor in all matters relating to the foundation.
The Club Grant Program was established to assist Kiwanis clubs in financing club service projects on a start-up basis. Many times, a Kiwanis club will give up on a worthwhile project because the funds required to get the project started are not available. Other grants offered by the Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation include Disaster Relief, Division Grants, Hope 4 Kids, Multi-Club Grants, and Pediatric Trauma. Besides grants, annual awards are offered as well.
To obtain additional information visit the Foundation's website or contact the Division 37 Foundation Ambassador (and Sunrise Vista club member) Tom Streeter via e-mail at tmstreeter@gmail.com

Interclub Projects
This year we will encourage club members to work on other clubs? projects. (Just think? no planning meetings to attend!). Show up and get your volunteer hours by helping out another club. You may end up exploring new ideas for your home club, enjoying yourself, and getting a special thank you gift from the Lieutenant Governor.
All Division 37 clubs will be in charge of their own interclub attendance. Sometimes, this will be the Secretary's duty, or in some cases may be assigned to a new member. What a great way to learn about our whole division!

Romania Project
After the fall of the Romanian dictatorship in 1989, thousands of children, mandated by the communist dictatorship as a future workforce, began to be released from orphanages each year as they reached young adulthood. Without jobs and lacking social and technical skills necessary to become productive members of the local economy, these youths were literally turned out into the streets to fend for themselves in whatever way possible.
To resolve this problem a two-phase project to build, equip, and support the operation of a Trade School for boys and a Transition Home for orphaned Romanian girls was begun.
The Kiwanis Club of Ramona initiated Phase I, the Trade School Project, in the fall of 2001. In less than two years, with the help of many Division 37 Kiwanians and by working with another Ramona-based organization, Heart-to-Heart International Ministries, land was purchased, permits obtained, and construction of the Boys' Trade School was completed. A grant from Kiwanis International completed efforts to furnish and equip the shops and classrooms. Trade School classes began in the autumn of 2003.
We were then able to redirect our attention and focus our resources to Phase II, construction of the Girls' Transition Home. With few resources these young girls are leaving the orphanages at age 18 and live on their own in the fragile Romanian economy. The cost to purchase the land and build The Girls' Transition Home is $45,000. As of this date, Division 37 and others in San Diego County, have raised $35,000 toward our goal. Negotiations to purchase the land were successful, permits have been issued, and construction is under way. The home will house sixteen girls and provide them the opportunity for a better life.
This is a project worthy of our motto "Serving the children of the world," which we as Kiwanians should be proud of because we will make a difference in the lives of these children.

Treasure Chest Literacy Program Kiwanis Clubs of Division 37 strive to help solve literacy deficiencies in San Diego County by providing free books for at risk children. These children are provided with the opportunity to earn books to take home and keep. We are responding to studies that show a high correlation between the number of books in the home and the educational success of the children in that home. There are 43,000+ children in territorial areas covered by Division 37 Kiwanis Clubs. Collectively, we can attempt to get books to all these children through fundraising efforts and grants. Currently, our Literacy Campaign places attractive treasure chests filled with age-appropriate books in educational agencies such as Head Start and our public schools. The Division 37 Coordinator (and Greater Encinitas club member) is Morris Pike, A.K.A. Captain Book. Who can be reached at mnpike@mac.com.
Young Children: Priority One/Seniors Priority Two

Coordinator (and Rancho Bernardo club member) Jason Rudolph, who can be reached by e-mail at jason.rudolph@morganstanley.com, will be forwarding information to clubs from Kiwanis International as well as offering project ideas. |
