Walter & Muriel
Schuette
Walt's nickname is "Walt." Muriel prefers "Maurie." (Rhymes with Lori).
Both Walt and Maurie belong to the Fallbrook Kiwanis Club. Walt joined Kiwanis in 1993 and ten years later Maurie joined. (Walt was having entirely too much fun!)
Walt's birthday is January 7th; Maurie's is June 29th.
They met in Pensacola, Florida aboard the Naval Air Station in 1967. Walt, a Marine Drill Instructor stationed there for duty; Maurie supervised the Uniform Shop in the Exchange. Both had been previously married. Walt courted Maurie for three years before she agreed to marry him. They have been married since November 2, 1970. Together they have one son, Walt Jr., living in Colorado; a son, Christopher Scott, living in Texas; and a daughter, Robin Lynn Tritt living in Kansas.
Walt has chaired all club committees, been active in Key Club and Builders Club, became a Distinguished Club President, Distinguished Club Secretary, served on the club's Board of Directors, and served three Lt Gov's as Division Webmaster and/or Newsletter Editor. Walt has received four DKA's, four DSA's, the President's Appreciation and Outstanding Service Awards, a Kiwanian of the Year Award, and a William A. Dunlap Fellowship.
Walt loves to go "off-road" with his Jeep. He has traveled off-road throughout the Southwestern area including Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. He also has spent off-road time in the desert sand of the Sonora Desert near El Golfo de Santa Clara, Sonora, Mexico and in the mountain dirt of the Sierra Juarez in Baja, California. Walt drove his stock 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee over 156 miles of the Baja 500 in 1999, and came home to drive 'up the rocks' on the back of Big Bear Mountain.
Walt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and spent 35 years, 6 months, and 4 days before retiring as a Major. Combat tours in Viet Nam included service with 1st Battalion, 1st Marines; 1st Battalion, 5th Marines; and 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. He is the recipient of the Cross of Gallantry from the Republic of Viet Nam among his other service awards.
After leaving the service, Walt returned to college to obtain another degree (Pepperdine University, Communications and National University, Human Resources) before starting his own business as a Career Coach ultimately serving clients in 11 countries and 43 states. A published author and keynote speaker at national conventions in his field, Walt rose to fame as a noted resume writer and career coach before closing his business sixteen years later in 2003.
Maurie spent 30+ years as a Federal Civil Service employee and retired at GS-12 as the Director of Personnel Support Services, Housing Department, MCB, Camp Pendleton. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Secretary of Defense, the highest award presented to Federal employees at Camp Pendleton.
Maurie joined Kiwanis and began contributing the moment she was inducted. Currently serving on the club's Board of Directors, she found time to chair several committees. Known in her club as the ?Sunshine Lady? for her enthusiasm and as the "Interclub Queen," a title she can justly be proud of as she was honored in 2006 with CNH District's Interclub Award for small clubs. She has also received the President's Appreciation and Distinguished Service Awards, and a William A. Dunlap Fellowship.
Maurie's passion is helping rescue Boxer dogs. They have had five over the last 20 years. Sophie, a beautiful 3-year old Chestnut Fawn Boxer, lives with them now. Buster, Josie, Heidi, Heinz, and Sophie were and are her greatest passion.
