Lt. Governor-Elect Betty Parker and Modie Moore
Betty and Modie, retired teachers from Connecticut, moved to San Diego in 2001.
Betty has a B.S. in Exceptional Children Education from the State University College in Buffalo, and an M.A. in Educational Psychology from New York University. She also completed a 6th year program that was split between Early Childhood Special Education and Early Childhood Education. Betty taught in Ohio and New York, but spent most of her career in New Canaan, CT. In 1992, she co-authored a resource book for teachers on the writing process and in 1995 authored a coloring/activity book for children for the town of New Canaan. Modie graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in English. He received a Masters in Administration from Columbia University and another Masters in Computer Education from Iona University. Modie taught in New York, but spent most of his teaching career in Wilton, CT. as an English teacher and then District Computer Coordinator.
After retirement, Betty became the principal of The Country School in San Marcos, a school for children with special learning needs. She "retired" from that position in June 2007 and is currently employed part time by Beauty Services /Ferguson Salon Management in Carlsbad. (Yes, Liz Ferguson is her boss!) Meanwhile, Modie pursued his passions, cooking, and playing the trombone, while he earned a Culinary Arts degree from Grossmont in 2005. Currently, Modie cooks part time at The Golden Door Spa in San Marcos and co-teaches the competition class in the ROP Culinary Arts Department at Grossmont. He joined the trombone section of the Coastal Communities Concert Band in 2002. (In the summer of 2003, the CCC Band was invited to play at a music festival in La Croix Valmer, France.)
Betty joined the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos in 2003. With the support of her phenomenal club members, she created the Kiwanis Country Kids club at The Country School. It is a combination club of K-Kids, Builders, and Key Club. These students continue to work diligently at fundraising, and involve themselves in projects that support the community. Betty was President of the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos for two years (2004-2006). Concurrently, during the year 2005-2006, she was the Charter President for The Kiwanis Club of Solutions for Change. This past term, Betty was the Division 37 Rose Float Coordinator, and joined the Board of Directors for the San Marcos Historical Society. Modie, although very supportive, is not a member of Kiwanis, but in high school was Lieutenant Governor of Key Clubs for Louisiana, Mississippi and West Tennessee.
Betty and Modie met in 1981 at a Leadership Conference in CT when they were both negotiators for their respective unions. They were married in 1984. In her free time, Betty truly likes creating stained glass windows and pysanky (a centuries old craft utilizing a batik process with beeswax and dyes on eggs.) Modie enjoys cooking and catering small dinner parties, vegetable carving, and playing in the band. Together, they love to laugh, travel, cook, go to movies, and enjoy their sweet cat, Cleome.
