Treasure Chest Literacy Campaign

Kiwanis Clubs of Division 37 strive to help solve literacy deficiencies in San Diego County by providing free books for at risk children.  These children are provided with the opportunity to earn books to take home and keep.  We are responding to studies that show a high correlation between the number of books in the home and the educational success of the children in that home.

Our Literacy Campaign places attractive treasure chests filled with age-appropriate books in educational agencies such as Head Start and our public schools.  First we build them.

Shown here are Al Sandstrom, advisor, and members of the La Costa Canyon KIWINS Club after building treasure chests.  Pictured are (standing left-right) Al Sundstrom, Ben Raynor, Jae Lee, Lauren Tami, Stephanie Chen, Lisa Park (kneeling left-right) Kristel Kim, Marina Mitchell, Yvonne Tami, Daniel Swansen, Sheila Grodey, and Ellen Chung.

Contact your local Kiwanis Club for more information!

Interested persons can help by donating new and "gently used" books or cash to Treasure Chest Literacy Campaign.

Pictured are Marilyn Phenow, Morris Pike, and cashier Sandy holding three children's books of the $2,100 worth of children's books recently purchased by the Kiwanis Clubs of Carlsbad and Greater Encinitas.  The books will go to public schools in Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad, CCHAT, Magdalena Ecke YMCA, and Head Starts throughout San Diego County.
